How Does a Photofacial (IPL) Work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photofacial, uses light energy to treat skin conditions without surgery. The treatment works by delivering high-intensity pulses of broadband light into the dermis, the deeper layer of skin, while leaving the epidermis, the surface layer, untouched. The light is absorbed by the skin's melanin and hemoglobin, which are damaged in the process. The damaged melanin breaks up and is absorbed by the skin, while the damaged hemoglobin increases blood flow, which helps the skin absorb the melanin more efficiently. The body then gets rid of the unwanted cells, which can help treat a range of skin conditions, including sun damage, dark spots, age spots, and rosacea.

Are Photofacials (IPL) Painful?

IPL treatments are quick, usually taking 30–60 minutes, and can cause the skin to appear slightly red and swollen. Patients may also feel a slight warming sensation and mild discomfort during the treatment, which has been described as feeling like a rubber band snapping on the skin.

How Fast Do Photofacials (IPL) Work?

Most patients see visible results after their first IPL session, but experts recommend 3–6 treatments scheduled about four weeks apart to get maximum results. IPL results can last for years if patients take good care of their skin and protect it from the sun.

How Long Does a Photofacial (IPL) Last?

Typically, however, the results of an IPL photofacial will be apparent for six months to a year. Dermatologists recommend maintenance treatments every six to 12 months to help prolong results.
